Ministerial Education Fund Application

The Ministerial Education Fund provides scholarship support for pastoral leaders who pursue continuing education to develop their skills and knowledge to meet the evolving needs of the leadership and ministry in the United Methodist Church.

The Ministerial Education Fund (MEF) provides scholarship support for pastoral leaders in the Oregon-Idaho Conference who pursue continuing education to develop their skills and knowledge to meet the evolving needs of the leadership and ministry in the United Methodist Church. This form refers to sections of the MEF Scholarship Policy.

MEF funding for continuing education is limited to $3,000 per person per quadrennium. (Section D)

Member in full connection for at least 6 years
Associate member for at least 8 years

The maximum grant for leave is $1,000, except in extenuating circumstances of leave longer than 1 month, and then only at the request of the District Superintendent (Section E).

*Reason for Renewal Leave and How the Funds Will Be Used

Unlike the study/travel leave grants, there is not an expectation of continuing education/professional development being part of this leave. This is intended to facilitate and support
clergy well-being.

*Amount Requested for Study/Travel Leave

MEF assistance shall provide the candidate a stipend for tuition or travel  in the amount of up to $1,250. MEF assistance may also pay the cost of supplying an interim minister in the clergyperson’s absence for up to $1,250 per month for 2 months, based on the local need. The third month is considered vacation and the responsibility of the local church. (Section E)

This aid shall not exceed a maximum of $4,500 to any applicant or more than $1,500 in one academic year (Section F).

Aid shall be pro-rated with up to $500 available for each nine (9) semester units taken. Total scholarship eligibility during less than full-time study shall be $3,000. (Section F)

*If a full-time scholarship is granted, I agree to the following:
  • I will carry a full-time academic load as defined by the seminary.
  • Upon completion of the academic training, I will serve under appointment in an annual conference of The United Methodist Church for a minimum of 2 years.
  • If I fail to meet any of these conditions, any amount advanced to the seminary shall be considered a loan, unless repaid within 5 years. It shall be repayable with an interest rate and on terms determined by the Board of Ordained Ministry.

Pastoral leaders from outside of the denomination who are in the process of joining the Oregon-Idaho Conference may receive up to $500 for each seminary course that is required for Methodist studies, up to a total of $1,500. (Section F, IV)

The Board of Ordained Ministry may approve special “block grants” for certain events that seem especially useful or vital. The limit for block grants for attendees is $500. Special block grants (section D VIII of the policy) will not normally apply to the MEF quadrennial limit. (Section D, VI)

The Board of Ordained Ministry may approve special “block grants” for certain events that seem especially useful or vital. The limit for event sponsors/hosts shall be $2,500, but may not exceed 50% of event’s total cost. Special block grants (section D VIII of the policy) will not normally apply to the MEF quadrennial limit. (Section D, VI)
